HOT FIVE: Week Of August 9, 2017

Welcome to Comicosity’s Hot Five. Hot Five is a short list of the top books we think you’ll want to be checking out. Be they new title launches, key issues or just continuing stories from some of the industry’s most acclaimed books, this list is your guaranteed gold in the comic market.

THE DEFENDERS #4
Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by David Marquez
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

• The streets of the Marvel Universe have exploded into chaos, and the only thing standing in between the innocent people of New York and that chaos are the Defenders.
•  But can a group of socially maladjusted heroes actually trust each other enough to continue as a team?
•  Can the Defenders partner up with a stranger in a devil costume? And what is Diamondback’s big plan?

Why It’s Hot: With The Defenders hitting Netflix next week it’s only right that the comic has quickly become one of the best that Marvel has to offer. With an A-list creative team, and an A-list lineup, the comic is one of those rare series that feel like an event level story with every issue. This is Bendis in his comfort zone, and at his best. Add the superstar caliber art of David Marquez and you have as good of a street level comic as there has been at the “Big 2” in years.

INHUMANS: ONCE AND FUTURE KINGS #1
Written by Christopher Priest & Ryan North
Art by Phil Noto & Gustavo Duarte
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

SOMEDAY, ALL OF THIS WILL BE YOURS!

A king in training. A brother destined for madness. These are the early days of the Boltagon legacy. When the king of the Inhumans is attacked, Black Bolt and Maximus spring into action to save their leader! But when Black Bolt loses control, what are the consequences for his future kingdom – or his own family? Plus: A two-page backup (in every issue!) starring Lockjaw, as told by UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL writer Ryan North and artist supreme Gustavo Duarte!

Why It’s Hot: Priest returns to Marvel to give the Inhumans a definitive “Year One” type origin story. The writer’s track record at Marvel is enough to ratchet up the anticipation for this series, but his work on Deathstroke has shown that he is still on top of his game. Add the amazing Phil Noto to the mix, and you have all the ingredients to tell the most iconic Inhumans story since Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee’s maxiseries in the late 90s.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #12
Written by Steve Orlando
Art by Ivan Reis
Published by DC Comics – $2.99

“CRISIS IN THE MICROVERSE” part one! It’s the story you’ve been waiting for! Ryan Choi leads the JLA on a rescue mission into the microverse to rescue his long-lost mentor, Ray Palmer, the original Atom, and unravel the mystery of his disappearance in DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1!

Why It’s Hot: It’s been over a year since DC Universe: Rebirth, and it’s finally time for Ray Palmer’s story to be told. Steve Orlando has proven himself over and over as one of the best writers DC has, and Ivan Reis is the “Big Game” a-list artist for the company. This has all the makings for a huge story arc.

MISTER MIRACLE #1
Written by Tom King
Art by Mitch Gerads
Published by DC Comics – $3.99

From the team behind THE SHERIFF OF BABYLON and the Hugo Award-nominated writer of Vision comes a unique new take on one of Jack Kirby’s most beloved New Gods.

Scott Free is the greatest escape artist that ever lived. So great that he escaped Granny Goodness’ gruesome orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to travel across galaxies and set up a new life on Earth with his wife, the former female fury known as Big Barda. Using the stage alter ego of Mister Miracle, he has made a career for himself showing off his acrobatic escape techniques. He even caught the attention of the Justice League, which counted him among its ranks.

You might say Scott Free has everything…so why isn’t it enough? Mister Miracle has mastered every illusion, achieved every stunt, pulled off every trick – except one. He has never escaped death. Is it even possible? Our hero is going to have to kill himself if he wants to find out.

Written by Tom King (BATMAN) and illustrated by Mitch Gerads (The Punisher), this is a MISTER MIRACLE unlike any you’ve read before.

Why It’s Hot: Read it, savor it, love it, read it again, and prepare to make room at the top of your “Best Of” lists. The best creative duo in all of comics have another winner on their hands, and will once again show the world just how good the comic book medium can be. Mister Miracle is the best celebration of Jack Kirby’s legacy that I can imagine as we draw closer to what would have been his one hundredth birthday.

REDLANDS #1
Written by Jordie Bellaire & Vanessa Del Rey
Art by Vanessa Del Rey & Jordie Bellaire
Published by Image Comics – $3.99

A brand-new horror book from the minds of Eisner Award-winner JORDIE BELLAIRE (PRETTY DEADLY, Vision, Batman) and critically acclaimed artist VANESA R. DEL REY (ZERO, Scarlet Witch, Constantine) brings you to the sleepy, sunny town of Redlands, Florida. The police are failing to maintain control of their old-fashioned town, and a coven of killer witches plan to take everything from them. This summer, hide your bibles.

Why It’s Hot: Jordie Bellaire has been one of the premiere color artists in all of comics for the past few years. She is now out to show everyone that she is indeed a double threat, as she adds writer to her resume. With art by the amazing Vanessa Del Rey, Redlands looks to make an immediate impact on the crowded horror comic market. I have a good feeling about this one.

ALSO AVAILABLE THIS WEEK:  Captain America #25, First Strike #1, Generations: The Phoenix #1, Hal Jordan And The Green Lantern Corps #26, Secret Warriors #5, The Shadow #1, Star Wars Rogue One: Cassian & K2SO Special #1
