HOT FIVE: Week Of December 6, 2017

Welcome to Comicosity’s Hot Five. Hot Five is a short list of the top books we think you’ll want to be checking out. Be they new title launches, key issues or just continuing stories from some of the industry’s most acclaimed books, this list is your guaranteed gold in the comic market.

BATMAN #36
Written by Tom King
Art by Clay Mann (Pencils), Seth Mann (Inks) & Jordie Bellaire (Colors)
Published by DC Comics – $2.99

“SUPERFRIENDS” part one! Batman and Superman. For so many years they’ve fought together for justice. Sometimes, they’ve even fought each other. Now, from the creators who broke your heart in “The Ballad of Kite Man” comes a look at how the flaws of each frightens the other and how the hope in each inspires the other. Don’t miss this two-part event that everyone will be talking about as the relationship between these two men is forever changed.

Why It’s Hot: Tom King’s run on Batman has been one of the best comics of 2017, and the book looks to close out the year in style as Superman and Lois Lane come to visit. Tom King examining the relationship between Bruce and Clark should be every bit as good as one would hope it to be. What do Lois and Clark think about Bruce and Selina being engaged? Will Superman or Clark Kent meet Catwoman? Will they go on a double date? Does Superman even know that Bruce is engaged? Find out in this beautiful issue that is made even more so by the phenomenal pencils of Clay Mann.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #696
Written by Mark Waid
Art by Chris Samnee (Pencils) & Matthew Wilson (Colors)
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

HOME OF THE BRAVE Part 2
• On his quest across America, Steve Rogers faces off against the brand-new Swordsman! Strap yourselves in for a sword vs. shield duel unlike anything you’ve ever seen!

Why It’s Hot: With their runs on Daredevil and Black Widow, the creative team of Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, and Matthew Wilson have proven themselves to be one of the premier creative teams in all of comics. After the wild, and controversial year that Steve Rogers had this team was tasked with bringing a back to basics approach to the original Sentinel Of Liberty. If the first issue was any indication, they are on their way to succeeding. This comic is pure superheroics, all brought to life by one of the best artists working today.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #34
Written by Christopher Priest
Art by Pete Woods
Published by DC Comics – $2.99

“LOST” part one! When the Justice League is confronted by three concurrent threats, a sleep-deprived Batman makes a crucial error that causes an unthinkable-and potentially unforgivable-tragedy. Legendary Eisner Award-nominated writer Christopher Priest (Deathstroke) is joined by artist Pete Woods for a brand-new must-read Justice League story like you’ve never seen before!

Why It’s Hot: Christopher Priest has been handed the reins to one of the biggest team books in all of comics. Christopher Priest gets to play in the sandbox with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Cyborg and The Flash. Did I mention that Christopher Priest is writing a Justice League comic? With all the hype surrounding Priest writing this book, Pete Woods should not be overlooked. He has quietly become one of the best in the business over the past decade. I don’t like telling people what to do, but I’ll make an exception here. This comic should be good, and you should be excited about buying it on Wednesday. If you’re still on the fence maybe our interview with PRIEST will help with the convincing.

ROCKO’S MODERN LIFE #1
Written by Ryan Ferrier
Art by Ian McGinty, K.C. Green (Pencils) & Fred C. Stresing (Colors)
Published by BOOM! Studios – $3.99

Ryan Ferrier (Regular Show) and Ian McGinty (Adventure Time) continue BOOM! Studios’ partnership with Nickelodeon with all-new stories about everyone’s favorite wallaby!
When Rocko faces unemployment, a terrible living situation, and increasingly slim job prospects, he is forced to find out just how far he is willing to go to get a job.

Features a backup story by KC Green where Ed Bighead finds himself in the dentist chair of Dr. Hutchison!

Why It’s Hot: BOOM! Studios continues its relationship with Nickelodeon, as another one of the cable network’s classic 90s cartoon makes the jump to the comic book page. Rocko’s Modern Life is a favorite for people of a certain age (of which I am included), and it’s exciting to see new stories featuring everyone’s favorite wallaby, If the creative team of Ryan Ferrier and Ian McGinty can capture the wild, surreal tone of the original series, this property will make a seamless transition to its new medium.

SLEEPLESS #1
Written by Sarah Vaughn
Art by Lelia Del Duca (Pencils) & Alissa Sallah (Colors)
Published by Image Comics – $3.99

Lady “Poppy” Pyppenia is guarded by the Sleepless Knight Cyrenic, but danger is around every corner once the new king is coronated. Writer SARAH VAUGHN (ALEX + ADA, ETERNAL EMPIRE) and artist LEILA DEL DUCA (SHUTTER, AFAR) team up with editor / colorist ALISSA SALLAH and letterer DERON BENNETT for this new fantasy romance.

Why It’s Hot: A new fantasy series from the writer of Alex + Ada and Eternal Empire, with art from the artist behind Shutter? A majority female creative team telling fantasy romance with a diverse cast of characters? Yes, this is going to be good. You can read our interview with the creative team of Sarah Vaughn, Leila Del Duca, and Alissa Sallah HERE.
