Every week, Comicosity brings you our Hot Five, a short list of the top books we think you’ll want to be checking out. Be they new title launches, key issues or just continuing stories from some of the industry’s most acclaimed books, this list is your guaranteed gold for the week in the comic market.
Welcome the new team of writer JEFF LEMIRE and artist ANDREA SORRENTINO! As Ollie struggles to come to terms with the loss of his fortune, his company and his heritage, he discovers a shocking truth about his father that ties to his time stranded on an island before he became Green Arrow. Plus: Green Arrow battles the deadly archer known as Komodo!
Why It’s Hot: Green Arrow has had a rough bit of it in the New 52. Shuffled from creator to creator (4 writers in 16 issues!), de-aged and disconnected from his pre-Flashpoint allies and support systems, Ollie’s been metaphorically adrift in this new universe. Sure, he’s been featured in his own television series, but that just made his comic book suffering all the worse to watch. Well, all that changes this Wednesday. Trust me. You want to read this book. EVERYONE wants to read this book. Jeff Lemire writes a compelling first chapter in the next evolution of Ollie Queen, and Andrea Sorrentino… what can I say? He was my #1 pick for Best Artist of 2012 for a reason. Buy this book.
NEW TEAM! NEW VILLAINS! NEW CREATORS! Valkyrie and Misty Knight are the Fearless Defenders and not since Power Man and Iron Fist has an unlikely duo kicked this much-well, you know. Writer Cullen Bunn (Venom, Sixth Gun, The Fearless) and new-to-Marvel artist Will Sliney (MacGyver, Star Wars) bring you the book everyone is going to be talking about on Thursday morning.
Why It’s Hot: Marvel continues its positive expansion of female-led titles with a brand new team book guaranteeing an all-female cast. Valkyrie and Misty Knight will soon be joined by Dani Moonstar, Hippolyta, and a host of other prominent Marvel heroines. Those who have wondered for years why Marvel couldn’t put together their own Birds of Prey-type team need wonder no longer! The day has come!

Romance is in the air in this very special Special! Wonder Woman consults Eros himself about her feelings for The Man of Steel. Barbara Gordon has always been too busy for romance, but could her role as Batgirl bring her back to the first guy she ever kissed? Following the events of “Death in the Family,” how can Catwoman ease Batman’s troubled soul? Aquaman makes waves as he treats his wife like a queen for a day. From the pages of STORMWATCH, Apollo and Midnighter celebrate Valentine’s Day separately but with each other in mind. Who-or what-stands between them? Dick Grayson and the daughter of Lucius Fox meet-cute! Plus: Perforated Valentine’s Day cards featuring the stars of these stories!
Why It’s Hot: One thing that’s been missing since the launch of the New 52 has been their intermittent holiday specials. I’ve long waited for the Dex-Starr/Krypto Valentine’s Day Special, and I guess I need to wait a bit longer. But in the meantime, we get treated to a bunch of short stories from some of the best writers and artists in DC’s stable. And if you’re a fan of the new Superman-Wonder Woman pairing (as I have grown to be), this is a can’t miss special.
Scarlet’s call to arms has been heard all over the world. And the world reacts. Can a modern revolution gain traction? And what will the government do to shut her down? From the Eisner Award-winning team behind DAREDEVIL and MOON KNIGHT!
Why It’s Hot: I can’t even remember when I pre-ordered this issue, that’s how long it’s been since its initial solicitation. But water under the bridge, because the continuing story of one woman’s resistance to the police and a corrupt society continues NOW! Utterly beautiful artwork paired with smart, careful writing makes Scarlet a book deserving of attention this week. Hopefully the wait for #7 won’t be nearly as long.
Jake Dobson is your typical nerd; works at the Near-Mint Rhino comic-book store in San Francisco. But when he finds a lost cell phone, he’s horrified to discover it’s full of snapshots of a murder victim. Suddenly he finds himself hunted by a vengeful hitman who wants his phone back… and Jake in a body bag! And then things start to get *really* complicated…
Why It’s Hot: The first creator-owned thriller from the team behind The Losers and Green Arrow: Year One, Snapshot is likely to be the sleeper hit of the week. Continuing Image Comics’ trend of giving top creators their shot at some of their most creative work, Snapshot could well be 2013’s first big hit for the growing publisher.
