HOT FIVE: Week Of January 11, 2017

Welcome to the first Comicosity Hot Five of 2017. Hot Five is a short list of the top books we think you’ll want to be checking out. Be they new title launches, key issues or just continuing stories from some of the industry’s most acclaimed books, this list is your guaranteed gold in the comic market.

ALL-STAR BATMAN #6
Written by Scott Snyder
Art by Jock
Published by DC Comics – $4.99

“Cold to the Core”! Batman travels to Alaska to confront Mr. Freeze as he attempts to extract the world’s oldest ice core and bring humanity to a new Ice Age! Powerhouse artist Jock joins Scott Snyder to bring you another of the Dark Knight’s rogues like you’ve never seen him before.

Why It’s Hot: Synder + Jock + Batman = must read each and every time.

GOD COUNTRY #1
Written by Donny Cates
Art by Geoff Shaw
Published by Image Comics – $3.99

SERIES PREMIERE

Emmet Quinlan, an old widower rattled by dementia, isn’t just a problem for his children-his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home-as well as the surrounding West Texas town-a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. The enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him more than a sound mind and body, however.

He’s now the only man who can face the otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State…

“So much fun to watch creators find that next level. Go, Cates, go!” -Brian Michael Bendis

Why It’s Hot: With Buzzkill, The Paybacks, and now God Country Cates and Shaw are quickly becoming one of those must read creative duos, and they’ve possibly saved their best for their image Comics debut. This just might be the comic that takes this creative team to the next level, and you’re going to want to say that you were there for it.

INHUMANS VS. X-MEN #2
Written by Charles Soule & Jeff Lemire
Art by Lenil Francis Yu
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

• The Inhumans have failed to find a way to stop the deadly effect the Terrigen Cloud has on Mutantkind, so the X-Men have taken matters into their own hands.
•  New Attilan is under attack!
•  The Inhumans aren’t surrendering their home without a fight, but is there something larger at stake?

Why It’s Hot: The first issue of the X-Men vs. Inhumans throwdown was awesome, as the X-Men came together like never before to strike first against the Inhumans. It was exactly what the first issue of an event should be. There was no wasting time, and got straight to the goods. Now the superstar creative team of Soule, Lemire, and Yu look to top that first issue with an explosive second one. How will the Inhumans respond? How will they handle having their backs against the wall? As one would say, there’s only one way to find out!

JUSTICE LEAGUE/MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #1
Written by Tom Taylor
Art by Stephen Byrne
Published by DC Comics & BOOM! Studios – $3.99

Two of comics greatest teams team up for the very first time! Something terrible has happened in Angel Grove! When the Command Center is breached and the teleporters are damaged, Zack is flung into another universe, where he’s mistaken for a villain by a mysterious masked vigilante. Can the other Power Rangers get to their friend in time to save him from Batman? Co-published with BOOM! Studios.

Why It’s Hot: My 8 year old self would be screaming right about now, and for good reason. DC and BOOM! have brought two of the biggest franchises in pop culture together for a huge intercompany crossover event. The best part? Taylor and Byrne are a genuine top notch creative team that should help garner interest from those that don’t have the emotional and nostalgic attachment to either group of characters.

THE MIGHTY THOR #15
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Russell Dauterman
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

THE “ASGARD/SHI’AR WAR” STARTS HERE!

•  As Malekith’s campaign to conquer the Ten Realms rages on, Thor and her League of Heroes lead the charge against the Dark Elf’s forces.

•  But far across the galaxy, another conflict is brewing and the most powerful super-army in the cosmos is preparing a surprise attack on the city of the gods.

•  The Shi’ar Empire will lay siege to Asgardia. Their target: the Goddess of Thunder.

Why It’s Hot: The Mighty Thor is consistently one of the very best comic books on the stand, and the next epic story begins here! Asgard goes head to head with the Shi’ar. It’s fantasy vs. science-fiction, and it’s going to look oh so pretty with art by Dauterman and Wilson. This is going to be awesome.

ALSO AVAILABLE THIS WEEK: Jessica Jones #4, Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad #4, Motor Crush #2, Southern Bastards #16, Uncanny Avengers #19
