WHY WE LOVE IT: Here at BOOM!, we’ve never shied away from exploring the dark crevices of the superhero genre. From Mark Waid’s IRREDEEMABLE to Mike Carey’s SUICIDE RISK, we love finding new ways to push the boundaries of our medium’s favorite genre.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: BLACK MARKET mixes the visceral noir/pulp sensibilities of Frank J. Barbiere’s Five Ghosts and Victor Santos’ Filthy Rich with a truly modern take on superhero mythos. If you love Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ work on Sleeper like we do, this series is for you.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Ray Willis is a broken man, a disgraced medical examiner making ends meet by preparing corpses at a funeral parlor. His scientific genius is being wasted—that is, until his estranged criminal brother Denny shows up on his doorstep, supposedly cleaned up and proposing a once-in-a-lifetime partnership to cure not just cancer, but all disease. The catch? It exists within the DNA of superheroes.

Why It’s Hot: Frank Barbiere is one of the fastest rising names in the industry today. With titles like Five Ghosts and White Suits along with his well received take on Doctor Strange in the recent New Avengers Annual it is needless to say he is a name to watch. Joined by artist Victor Santos, Black Market is a  stylish, pulpy, unique take on the superhero genre that is poised to be a breakout hit!

Written by Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti
Art by Amanda Conner & others
Published by DC Comics – $4.99

The title says it all! Our favorite little troublemaker, Harley Quinn, takes on Comic-Con International: San Diego in this over the top issue! She’ll have to battle long lines, crazy crowds and the dread con crud, all in the quest to get her own comic book published!

Why It’s Hot: One of the craziest, most popular characters in the DC stable tackles the craziest, most popular pop culture event of the year! Will she be camping out with me and Roddy for Hall H on Saturday morning? Will she be able to contain her rage while waiting in the long line for the Hasbro exclusives? Will she be digging through the dollar bins hoping to find her first appearance in The Batman Adventures #12? Will she crash a Batman panel and give Jimmy a big kiss in front of Amanda!? Or will she FINALLY admit to her long time crush on Dan DiDio, because he reminds her of an ex boyfriend? I’m guessing none of the above, but we can expect a fun, wacky, 4th wall breaking good time by some amazing talent.

Published by DC Comics – $4.99

The hunt for Robin is over, and the battle joined! But Batman’s family feud with Ra’s al Ghul is about to erupt into something bigger when it’s interrupted by the forces of Apokolips! This epic story continues in this month’s BATMAN AND ROBIN #33!

Why It’s Hot: Tomasi + superstar artist Andy Kubert = Robin Rises. ‘Nuff Said

Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

•  Charles Xavier’s last will and testament is discovered.
•  But is something concealed within the pages that might be the X-Men’s ultimate undoing?

Why It’s Hot: Brian Michael Bendis brings Uncanny X-Men into the Original Sin fold with a story that promises to turn the X-Men line on its head. Even in death Charles Xavier has always been one of the most controversial characters in comics. What will his last will and testament read? How will it effect each and every X-Men character? Be here for what Bendis himself described as “probably the most incendiary X-Men story, maybe ever.”

Written by Kieron Gillen
Art by Jamie McKelvie & Matt Wilson
Published by Image Comics – $3.50

Diabolically divine pop-god Lucifer is in trouble. She offers superfan Laura an unprecedented deal if she helps. It’s a bargain. A Faustian bargain, and they always turn out so well. Who knows who Laura will turn to fulfill it? We do. Clearly. It’s our comic. You can know too if you buy this fine pictorial narrative with your human money coins.

Why It’s Hot: Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie go together like PB&J, and the first issue of their new creator owned title took the comic book world by storm last month. The Wicked + The Divine is back for round two and if you through the first issue was good, well you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!
