HOT FIVE: Week Of March 21, 2018

Welcome to Comicosity’s Hot Five. Hot Five is a short list of the top books we think you’ll want to be checking out. Be they new title launches, key issues or just continuing stories from some of the industry’s most acclaimed books, this list is your guaranteed gold in the comic market.

BATMAN #43
Written by Tom King
Art by Mikel Janin, Hugo Petrus & June Chung
Published by DC Comics – $2.99

“Everyone Loves Ivy” part three! The quest to end Ivy’s domination heads toward a close, but can Batman offer Ivy redemption on the other side of this crime? It’s an epic showdown between the Caped Crusader and one of his most popular foes, brought to you by the creative team behind “The War of Jokes and Riddles.”

Why It’s Hot: Tom King, Mikel Janin, and company’s “Everyone Loves Ivy” arc comes to an end here. Trust me, this will be the comic book that everyone will be talking about this week. The question fans have been asking of DC for years will be answered: Is Poison Ivy a villain? For better or worse, this is one comic that all Ivy fans will want to check out. Oh did I mention that we are one step closer to the Batman/Catwoman wedding? Tom King’s classic in the making run continues to impress!

DOCTOR STRANGE: DAMNATION #3
Written by Donny Cates & Nick Spencer
Art by Szymon Kudranski & Dan Brown
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

• Wong’s makeshift Midnight Sons (Iron Fist! Blade! Moon Knight! The Scarlet Spider?!) stand against a whole platoon of Ghost Riders!

Why It’s Hot: The new Midnight Sons versus The Avengers with the souls of Las Vegas on the line! Damnation has shown that not every event has to crossover throughout a comic book universe to be successful. Most of the time less is more when it comes to crossovers and that’s the case here. Cates, Spencer, Kudranski, Reis, and everyone involved have setup a huge story with huge stakes without needing to interupt every book under the sun to tell it. This is good stuff. Oh yeah, if the last few pages of this issue are any indication this is a gamechanging issue for at least one longtime Marvel character!

INFINITY 8 #1
Written by Lewis Trondheim & Zep
Art by Dominique Bertail
Published by Lion Forge Comcis – $3.99

A city sized space cruiser runs into a field of debris between galaxies, and it is up to the ship’s top eight security agents to figure out how to circumnavigate it. Investigating eight different parallel timelines, the agents uncover multiple plots that together could spell the end of the ship’s massive interspecies population

•The debut of a far out, pulpy, sci fi series of parallel adventures in the tongue in cheek tradition of the original Heavy Metal, but for a new generation.

•Eight different 3 issue arcs explore each of the agents parallel investigations, each by a different creative team of the most popular creators in France: Lewis Trondheim, Olivier Vatine Zep, Dominique Bertail, Fabien Vehlmann, Balez, Kris, Trystram, De Felici, and Boulet.

•Each 3 issue arc is self contained, but together they unravel the larger mystery.

•Conceived and directed by the legendary Lewis Trondheim and Olivier Vatine.

Why It’s Hot: Lion Forge has quickly carved out a space in the market by establishing itself as one of the most unique publishers around. Their focus on diversity has been a creative boon to indie comics and instead of resting on their laurels in that department they continue to expand and try new things. Infinity 8 is a sci-fi comic featuring some of the most popular French creators in comics. For many American readers this may very well be an introduction to what has been historically one of the bigger comic book hotbeds in the world. If you like comics (you’re reading this, so you do), and science fiction you may want to keep an eye out on this comic.

THE MIGHTY THOR #705
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Russell Dauterman & Matthew Wilson
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

THE DEATH OF THE MIGHTY THOR Part 6
The epic showdown years in the making finally explodes across the heavens. Thor battles the unstoppable Mangog, with the fate of all Asgardia hanging in the balance. Is Thor willing to pay the ultimate price in order to save the gods? The tragic and heroic story of Jane Foster finally reaches its heart-rending zenith. You knew it was coming. The Death of Thor is here at last.

Why It’s Hot: The time has come. I cheered, I pumped my fist, and I cried. I have a feeling you will too. One of the best comic books runs of the past five plus years reaches a turning point that will change the Marvel Thor mythos forever. Prepare yourself accordingly.

THANOS #17
Written by Donny Cates
Art by Geoff Shaw & Antonio Fabela
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

THANOS WINS Part 5
• THE SURFER STRIKES! Thanos and his future self take on the most powerful opposition to his reign left in the universe – Norrin Radd.
• Can even two Thanoses crack his Cosmic Shell?

Why It’s Hot: Thanos, Thanos, and Cosmic Ghost Rider take on a Mjolnir wielding Silver Surfer, as arguably the most bad ass comic being published by the Big 2 continues. Does Silver Surfer Thor stand a chance? Spoiler Alert: THANOS WINS! It’s right there in the title, but it’s the how and what comes next that will get fans all sorts of excited.
