HOT FIVE: Week Of May 17, 2017

Welcome to Comicosity’s Hot Five. Hot Five is a short list of the top books we think you’ll want to be checking out. Be they new title launches, key issues or just continuing stories from some of the industry’s most acclaimed books, this list is your guaranteed gold in the comic market.

BATMAN #23
Written by Tim King
Art by Mitch Gerads
Published by DC Comics – $2.99

In a new story The Brave and the Mold! Swamp Thing comes to Gotham City featuring new art and cover by Mitch Gerads.

Why It’s Hot: Tom King writing a Batman/Swamp Thing team up is great. Tom King being joined by frequent collaborator Mitch Gerads to tell the story of said team up is even better. One might say it’s like a miracle (see what I did there?). King’s grasp on the characters is wonderful, and Gerads brings the pages to life. This special one shot, with a wonderful dedication, will have fans of both characters asking for more!

THE FLASH #22
Written by Joshua Williamson
Art by Howard Porter
Published by DC Comics – $2.99

“THE BUTTON” part four! The cataclysmic events of DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1 continue here! The Dark Knight and The Fastest Man Alive, the two greatest detectives on any world, unite to explore the mystery behind a certain blood-stained smiley button embedded in the Batcave wall. What starts as a simple investigation turns deadly when the secrets of the button prove irresistible to an unwelcome third party-and it’s not who anyone suspects! It’s a mystery woven through time, and the ticking clock starts here!

Why It’s Hot: The Button comes to an end, as the secrets of Rebirth inch closer and closer to being revealed. Will we get a taste of what’s next with the recently announced Doomsday Clock? Will we actually see a certain big blue dude? A glimpse into what lies ahead for DC Comics will certainly be found in this comic, and it will surely go down as the biggest issue of the month!

GENERATION X #1
Written by Christina Strain
Art by Amilcar Pinna
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

The Xavier Institute for Mutant Education and Outreach has opened its doors and is ready to foster the next generation of heroes and diplomats! But this time around, the X-Men recognize an unfortunate truth: not all mutants are created equal. Some mutants are not made to fight Sentinels or serve as ambassadors on behalf of their kind. Some mutants will just be lucky to survive another day in a world that hates and fears them. And who better to mentor mutantkind’s lovable losers than perpetual sidekick Jubilee? But will Jubilee and GENERATION X survive the experience??

Why It’s Hot: Generation X is back. Some of us have been waiting years for this moment, and it’s finally here. Granted, as far as we know the only cast member from the original series that will be in this one is Jubilee, but I have a feeling some familiar faces will show up. If not? We have a collection of some of the most (and least to be frank) memorable X-Men students being led by Jubilee. That right there is enough to get excited. Whatever happens from there is just gravy.

NICK FURY #2
Written by James Robinson
Art by ACO
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

BANG ZOOM, TO THE MOON!!

•  FURY’s next out of this world mission lands him on a secret moon base!
•  But will this be one small step for S.H.I.E.L.D…. or a giant leap for HYDRA?!

Why It’s Hot: The first issue of Robinson and ACO’s Nick Fury was one of the biggest surprises in recent comic book memory. The issue was everything one would want from a spy comic, and more specifically a Nick Fury comic. For the last several years we’ve been waiting for Nick Fury Jr. to come into his own as a character, and step out from the shadow of his father. That has finally happened with this new series. If you like your comics sharp, beautiful, and action packed you’ll want to make sure you’re reading Nick Fury.

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE 455 A.D. #1
Written by Kieron Gillen
Art by Andre Araujo
Published by Image Comics – $3.99

“CITY OF GOD”

Nothing lives forever, be it man, god, or empire, but that doesn’t mean you have to go quietly. Join us as Lucifer refuses to fiddle while the Roman Empire burns. The critically acclaimed THE WICKED + THE DIVINE inevitably vandalizes history as it turns to the Sack of Rome. Showcasing the epic art of ANDRÉ LIMA ARAÚJO (Avengers AI, Man Plus), the special is NOT included in the forthcoming fifth volume of THE WICKED + THE DIVINE.

Why It’s Hot: The Wicked + The Divine is still one of the best comics around, and the series of one shots taking place at different points throughout history is just another reason why. Gillen is joined by Andre Araújo to out a #WicDiv spin on Rome, and It’s everything one would want from it. The fact that the one shot WON’T be collected with the upcoming collection makes this issue a must buy for fans of the series.

HIDDEN GEM OF THE WEEK:

THE SOVEREIGNS #1
Written by Ray Fawkes & Kyle Higgins
Art by Johnny Desjardins & Jorge Fornes
Published by Dynamite Entertainment – $3.99

The epic that will redefine the Gold Key heroes continues! The year is 2025, Turok has gone missing and Magnus is good and worried about that. When even a time traveling mission to confer with Doctor Spektor and the creature once known as Solar don’t yield any answers, Magnus must brave the unknown to track the missing hero down. Plus: An all-new Magnus backup by Kyle Higgins and Jorge Fornés that sets the stage for next month’s big announcement!

Why It’s Shiny: One of Dynamite’s secret weapons over the past few years has been their use of the Gold Key characters. Some of the best work to come out of the publisher in recent years has featured characters like Magnus, Solar, Doctor Spektor, and Turok. This is the next step in redefining these characters, and you won’t want to miss out.
