Interview: Matt Rebholtz Sheds Light on THE ASTRONOMER

Matt Rebholtz wants to take you on a psychedelic cosmic journey, are you ready to go? After recently finishing Floating Head Bounty Killers, Rebholtz kicked off his Kickstarter campaign for the second leg of his journey, The Astronomer. Rebholtz recently took time to talk about the campaign, the book, and what readers can expect from The Astronomer.

Aaron Long: The Astronomer is the second chapter of a larger story, started in Floating Head Bounty Killers. Can you discuss what the series as a whole is about?

Matt Rebholtz: It’s an abstract/mythic/psychedelic/apocalyptic/cosmic Western.

AL: Does The Astronomer function as a jumping on point for new readers? Or will readers need to get their hands on Floating Head Bounty Killers to know what is going on?

MR: A reader can totally jump in with The Astronomer and not be at too much of a loss. So far the parallels are aesthetic and thematic rather than narrative, so you’ll recognize certain elements that show up in both chapters but at this point, the two chapters operate independently of each other.

AL: You are artist and writer for this book/series. What is your creative process? Do you modify the script as you pencil or do you script fully and then get to work with the art?

MR: I’m an artist who has always loved and been influenced by comics, but this is my first serious attempt to make one (as an adult, anyway). One of the most exciting things about this process is having to figure it out as I go. I’ve been working very organically, writing and drawing at the same time. I know certain things that are going to happen, but I’m not always sure how the story is going to get there.

AL: The Astronomer is a Kickstarter campaign, can you discuss the different reward levels for those wanting to pledge to the project?

MR: I just finished a week long artist-in-residency at Evil Prints in St. Louis (http://www.evilprints.com/), where I made two new hand-pulled etchings that I’ll be posting as new incentives the next couple of days. Besides these prints, I’ve got excellent deals at all financial levels including postcards, comics, hand screen-printed T-shirts, original pages from the comics, opportunities to have a grotesque and unflattering likeness of yourself drawn into the comic, etc.

AL: Any final words for Comicosity’s readers regarding The Astronomer?

MR: Thanks for looking! Click on the link to the kickstarter campaign & get yourself some stuff.
