Interview: Tyler Kirkham Discusses THE MONARCHY

Dig fantasy comics? If so, then has Tyler Kirkham got the book for you. Kirkham is the writer of The Monarchy, first in a line of graphic novels currently on Kickstarter to rally the funds to launch into full publication. He took time to give us the skinny on The Monarchy, what it is about, what rewards you can get for helping fund the project, and more.

Aaron Long: Can you discuss how The Monarchy came together? Have you had the idea for awhile?

Tyler Kirkham: I came up with it years ago. The book has been in production for about 3 years though. Oracle, the artist and I have wanted to work on something together, but I didn’t feel confident in writing a full story. That is when I approached Mandy Mcmurray to help script it out! I have known her for years, and she is actually the one that introduced me to Oracle. After lots of brain storm sessions and plot discussions, Mandy went to town. We went back and forth a lot until we got the story hammered out. We are still making story edits though. Mainly dialogue.

AL: Straight from the writer’s mouth: how would you describe The Monarchy to potential readers?

TK: The Monarchy is Underworld meets Castlevania. Here is the premise:

Far beneath the mundane reality of our everyday lives, hidden within the echoes of our most famous legends, exists a world shrouded in secrecy. A world of magic and myth, where an ancient order of sorcerers act as guardians, protecting the world from the forces that seek to destroy life as we know it.
They are the Monarchy.

Passed down through a mysterious guild, they are magical warriors that carry within them the stolen Seven Powers of Creation and through them, hold back the tide of evil led by an equally powerful order of dark sorcerers called Warlocks. An evil that has threatened mankind for generations.
Unfortunately, only one Monarch now remains. In a desperate act of heroism, the last of the Monarchy, uses his last breath to pass on a mystical legacy to his unsuspecting grandson, initiating him into a world of darkness with a trial by fire; survive and save the world, or die and let the powers of darkness overtake it.

Now, young Andreas must embrace his power or be destroyed by the evil Cabal that hunts him. With the help of a renegade warrior-guardianess, they must face his grandfather’s murderer, her past, and his destiny, or lose the battle against evil for all time.

AL: Will The Monarchy be a single volume story or are you preparing for a multiple volume series?

TK: Its meant to be 3 full books. 150-170 pages each. We have a lot of story to tell and the first book just scratches the surface. We are hoping to get this one off the ground. The money that we make from the book sales will fund the next book. The problem we are having is funding and printing the first book. That is what Kickstarter is for.

AL: The Monarchy is a Kickstarter project. Can you discuss how people can get involved and the various rewards you are offering?

TK: Through Kickstarter people can pledge if they want to see the book hit shelves. We are offering lots of good rewards. Everything from Digital and printed copies of the book. Credits and thank you’s printed in the book. Custom artwork of you or your children as a character. We are even offering a chance to create characters and a mini story that will appear in the book. One that I recently added was advertising in the book. If you donate $500-1000 we will place half or full pages adds for your company/product or projects.

AL: Any final words on The Monarchy for Comicosity’s readers?

TK: Please check out our Kickstarter page and look though all the material, Watch the trailers and check out the updates for concept and development art. Even stuff created just for Kickstarter!

Also if people like it we encourage them to spread the word anyway they can. Word of mouth is the only way we will meet our goal!

The Monarchy can be found on Kickstarter here.
