Step into the dark future of Bruce Wayne and see how kind the future has been to Batman in this Futures End look from Fawkes, Snyder and Aco.

Ray Fawkes and Scott Snyder give readers a brilliant look at the future in one of the strongest issues of the Futures End event so far. The dialogue and plot of this issue are fantastic, with a broken Bruce Wayne and Alfred having some of their best exchanges of recent memory, highlighting a very dark scenario for Batman. This issue is brimming with exciting questions of what led to the current state of affairs and what Batman is going to do to rectify the situation. Fawkes and Snyder do everything with this issue that a one-shot should: they tease an exceptionally interesting future, throw out a fantastic amount of plausible questions, and deliver an action packed adventure that shows the rivalry between Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor still exists five years later. This issue is full of subtle nods to elements of the Bat-universe that ties current storylines together well while leaving so much open for exploration that I can’t help but just feel excited for more Batman stories based on this issue. If this is truly where the title ends up five years from now I can’t wait to read the road that gets us here.

Aco keeps pace with the strong script by delivering top notch art that suits this story perfectly. Aco’s work is strong from start to finish, showcasing the future in a way that is very plausible considering where current Batman stories are taking place. Aco’s artwork has the perfect amount of grit for the story being told, while giving characters like Lex Luthor the perfect smug grins for the situation. The colour work by FCO Plascencia highlights Aco’s strengths well, and the two work well together. The overall tone of this issue fits with the Batman line very well and this issue feels like an extension of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s series.

Ray Fawkes, Scott Snyder and Aco deliver a killer one shot with Batman: Futures End #1. This is a great single issue for anyone to pick up and enjoy, and showcases the strength of the characters involved in this issue. Readers will be compelled to find out what leads to this state five years in the future and, more than anything, I can’t wait to see what Snyder is going to cook up for readers next.

The Verdict: 9.5/10
