Oh Carol, what have you gotten yourself into now? Captain Marvel #12 jumps right in, and right into my question. Carol orbs back to her ship (via rockstar/mutant Lila Cheney’s teleportation powers, just before being ditched by said rockstar/mutant) to a very eerily quiet environment. Where is her new friend Tic? Where is the Flerken cat Chewie? Things begin to feel more and more claustrophobic with every turn of the page as a newly solo Carol employs Harrison the practically sentient computer system to help her figure out what has happened to her “team.” The first part of “The sevens seconds before you die” feels very much like the shooting off point of something disastrous in epic proportions. Kelly Sue really knows how to hit us right in the feels with a missing cat debacle. Come on, really? You have to kill us with worry like this?

Kelly Sue certainly doesn’t pussyfoot around with the scientific jargon or space lingo. Star Wars nerds (like me)  will especially like this issue as this is very much in that vein. Although a big chunk of this Captain Marvel run has taken place in the final frontier (yes that’s a Star Trek reference), I would very much consider this the “spaciest” issue to date. We’ve got dark matter, we’ve got hyperspeed, we’ve got everything from main sequence stars to sublight engines. I hope you fastened your seatbelts kids, because we are punching it into overdrive here in the “OMG!” department. David Lopez continues to kick the whole thing up a notch with his linework, giving Carol the personality we all imagine her to have. Her facial expressions are brilliantly balanced between elegant and quirky. Thank you guys for another home run, I can’t wait to see where this arc takes us!

The Verdict: 8.0/10
