Review: EDISON REX #1

EDISON REX #1
Written by Chris Roberson
Art by Dennis Culver
Release Date: July 4, 2012

Edison Rex is a comixology exclusive from Monkeybrain Comics that endeavours to answer the question of what a villain would do without a hero to protect the earth. Edison Rex is a criminal genius, facing-off against his arch-nemesis Valiant. This book is an easy read, albeit way too short at only 16 pages.

Chris Roberson has done a great job with characterization in this book. Valiant is a character who sounds like a silver age comic hero, while Edison Rex sounds like a pragmatic super genius. This is an incredibly well written throwback style comic book that gives you the best of the old, with a twist of the new. The dialogue is clever, without being too obscure, and he allows the art to tell the story.

The art by Dennis Culver is very clean, and offers enough variation to be enjoyable. There are character designs that remind you of other characters throughout comic history, but the most important element of his art, is that the characters just look super. The flashback panels are obvious, and you can tell that he is having a lot of fun working on this title.

Edison Rex is the type of book I expect Alan Moore to write, save that it isn’t overly pretentious. The perfect blend of the old and the new, without being over-written, and too wink-wink ‘as long as you have read comics for decades you will understand this’. This series is great fun, and I love the concept of a criminal genius protecting the earth. Well worth the look, especially for a mere 99 cents.

Verdict: 9.0/10 (for the last page alone)
