With each page flip, the world of Secret Wars makes a little more sense and the event becomes even more intense.

Hickman is a masterful planner and so many pieces are coming into place with this issue. The relationship between Doom and those closest to him is examined in this issue, with an immense amount of details as to how this Battleworld came to be finally exposed. Hickman writes these characters very well, with Doom in particular delivering some fantastic lines. I’m more than a bit partial to the character, but I think most will see that this is some of the best written Doom…ever and the character is seemingly undergoing a shift under Hickman’s watch. Whether or not that will stay is yet to be seen, but either way, God Doom is one hell of an entertaining character.

The plot of the issue is very strong, and the pace is excellent. The creation of Battleworld is explained through details in several conversations instead of a grand narrative or long speech, which I appreciated. Hickman’s attention to small details makes the myth of God Doom that much stronger and when the major reveals of the issue occur, they are that much better. There are a few big events in this issue and it ends with an amazing final page, and it is obvious that Hickman has major plans for the rest of this series. He has yet to let me down, so I will certainly be following him blindly into whatever comes next.

Esad Ribic’s artwork is solid, though there are a few more …wrinkles than in the past two issues. By wrinkles I mean panels that just feel off, where a character’s facial expressions feel unfinished or awkward. There are still a great many pages that are absolutely astounding, and this is really saying that artwork that was basically perfect is now just simply amazing. Ribic does his best work when penciling a big, epic scene and this issue is full of them. His style is perfect for the tale of Secret Wars and when the heavy hitters start trading blows I think fans will be in for a treat.

Secret Wars #3 is another strong issue in the event, and if you’ve been enjoying it so far, Hickman and Ribic will not disappoint you. This is a crazy huge epic that is unfolding before us, and I’m enjoying every page of it.

The Verdict: 9.0/10
