Boba Fett is dead. Rather chilling words in the Star Wars galaxy, and for fans of the character. For a Star Wars reader, those are the kinds of words that give you whiplash and make you drop the line: “say wha?” The first issue examines some of the fallout of the death of the galaxy’s most feared bounty hunter, and the actions taken by Connor Freeman to exact retribution upon the group who laid waste to the legendary figure. The story, set approximately 10 years before the Episode IV, is rather straightforward. I won’t spoil anything with particular details, but so far this book feels like a straight up vengeance story that will most likely feature some good feints and twists along the way. Issue #1 does a good job of diving straight into the action quickly. This comic is not filled with exposition or explanation of who Fett is and what he has done and let’s face it: if you are picking up this book you know who Fett is, and you want to know why/how he has died. Issue #1 deals with a lot of shadowy figures and sets up some decent plot streams and kicks off this series well.

On the art front Chris Scalf provides visuals that aren’t typical for a Star Wars book which makes this issue very interesting. There are some inconsistencies in style throughout the book which may be the fault of colouring, I’m not sure, but for the most part the art does not detract from the story. Scalf handles the details of the various species in the book well and his panel composition and layouts are very strong. At times I felt the art bordered on fantastic and I have high hopes that issue #2 doesn’t have the few panels that irked me.

This issue is a decent start to a series that will ultimately be defined by the twists and turns of the next few issues. I’m locked in for the next one and then we’ll see where it goes…

Verdict: 7.0/10
