Review: THE MASSIVE #2

THE MASSIVE #2
Written by Brian Wood
Art by Kristian Donaldson
Release Date: July 11, 2012

I feel like I have been waiting for this comic for an exceedingly long time and it already feels like it will be eons before I get to read #3. Reading an issue of The Massive is not only a treat, but an immersion into a gripping and eerie world that feels like it is completely plausible. The very real possibility of this book adds to the spookiness of the book, the underlying tension of “what the hell happened to make this world so”? Add in some fantastic characterization, amazing plotting, inventive locations and you’ve got one of the best comics in the business. Wood is firing on all cylinders with this issue, slowly peeling away layers to this metaphorical onion of a series, and taking us to an absolutely amazing and visually astounding location. This series is massive in scope and concept and Wood’s writing is superb. I cannot compliment it enough.

Donaldson’s art is very strong in this issue, grabbing my attention several times to the point of me having to re-read what actually was happening. The primary location of this book is stunning and one of the most interesting locations I’ve seen in comics in quite awhile. Needless to say, it is a wonder to behold and Donaldson evokes a sense of absolute awe with those pages. Wood and Donaldson are a great tandem, and this issue is what happens when a writer and artist are exceedingly talented and in sync.

Verdict: 9.0/10
