Review: Ultimate Comics Ultimates #6

ULTIMATE COMICS THE ULTIMATES #6
Written by Jonathan Hickman
Art by Brandon Peterson & Esad Ribic
Release Date: January 25, 2012

After what appeared to be a recap issue last month, Ultimates #6 is back and driving forward once again. The title’s pace has definitely slowed from it’s opening issues and while there isn’t a lot of action in this issue, there are some really strong character moments and excellent dialogue. Whenever I read a comic by Jonathan Hickman I can’t help but feel it is part of a larger plan, and this is one of those issues. This issue takes some time to process what happened in the first few issues of this series and how to proceed from here. There are some great moments in this book with Steve Rogers, Jamie Braddock and even Reed Richards, explaining The City a little bit more yet still keeping the intrigue at an extreme high. As snappy as the dialogue is and while the tension is becoming more and more palpable, I find myself yearning for the crazy action of the first few issues. This is a good comic, don’t get my wrong, but this volume of Ultimates was born of chaos and fire and I’d love to see it get back there soon.

In the visuals department, the book is handled by both Brandon Peterson and Esad Ribic. The book is laid out extremely well, so much so that the transfer between Peterson to Ribic and back to Peterson is hardly noticeable at all and does not disturb the flow at all. Ribic has been fantastic on this series so far, and Peterson really shows that he can keep pace with this issue. The pencils are solid, the layouts are interesting, and both artists provide really strong art for this issue. I’d happily have Peterson and Ribic work together on more Ultimates, it is a very easy issue on the eyes.

Pros: Strong dialogue, story moving forward well, great art.

Cons: Very verbose issue, not a lot of action for a series that was so “high octane” a few issues ago.

Verdict: 8.0/10
