Review: X-O MANOWAR #2

Written by Robert Venditti
Art by Cary Nord
Release Date: June 6, 2012

Valiant, you’ve got a hit on your hands, I tell you what. X-O Manowar #1 hit the scene at the beginning of May and caused quite the media frenzy and the issue held up to the hype. I can happily say that the second issue continues the high standard set with the first issue and has made this series a must-read. Venditti is building a universe here and Valiant was not kidding when they teased that “war is coming”. The pacing of this issue is excellent, focusing on the trials that Aric and his comrades are going through during their imprisonment. This build up makes the final page of the issue all that more explosive and I found myself cursing that I’d have to wait a month to see what happens next. Venditti is scripting and plotting this series very well so far, and I am looking forward to see what the next issues of this series bring.

On the art front, Cary Nord steals the show for me with this issue. He creates a stark and alien environment extremely well and the pencils never falter from start to finish. Valiant chose very well when they recruited Nord for this assignment as he is the perfect fit for this content. Aric is an intense character and Nord reflects that by giving this character some of the most intense eyes in comics. That may seem like a small detail, but the constant focus on detail is appreciated and this is some great comic book art.

X-O Manowar #2 is a solid comic book. It lacks a little bit of the energy issue #1 had, but this series has been dynamite so far and I hope Venditti and Nord are settling in for a long run…

Verdict: 8.0/10
