THE HONOR ROLL: March 19th, 2014 Releases

Another wonderful week for comics! So many great ones to read, hard to pick what was the best. We have great spoiler filled picks for you this week, hope you enjoy!

AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SECOND CYCLE #1 – Ken Godberson III

No other words needed.

01

About Me: When he is not working at a library or on his Master’s Degree, Ken Godberson III is usually writing comics, prose and screenplays. He tends to be an expert on absolutely nothing except on why Impulse is the greatest superhero ever. He can be found on Twitter @kengodbersoniii or on Tumblr at http://kengodbersoniii.tumblr.com/

DAREDEVIL #1 – Tom Barnett

It’s been a while since I picked a panel from Daredevil, not because they weren’t worthy, but just to highlight other books. This week though I have to go with a panel from Daredevil #1. Samnee and colorist Javier Rodriguez outdid themselves. This was the first panel I saw as I skimmed the book. He’s trying to catch a falling child and a flock of pigeons fly by. What a great illustration of how DD’s powers work and what can fowl, get it, them up.

02

About Me: I’m Tom. Slightly addicted to comics, Doctor Who, Star Wars and Star Trek. I also try to spend some time behind the lens of my camera. Love Bronze Age comics and the Black Hole movie from Disney. Follow me @tphoto10

SEX CRIMINALS #5 – Corey Fryia

I couldn’t tell you why but I find failed or ancient search engine references to be hysterical. So when references to Bing and Ask Jeeves popped up in the pages of Sex Criminals, I knew I had found my lick of the week. This panel left me in tears!

03

About Me: Corey Fryia is a independent comic book creator and former Associate Editor at Readcomicbooks.net. He loves creator-owned comics and has a very manly beard. You can follow him (and his manly beard) on Twitter @coreyfryia

LAZARUS #7 – Leidamarie Tirado-Lee

At this point, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve picked Lazarus as my BOTW. Probably every time it is out but each and every time it absolutely deserves it. This world feels so real to me and it is so hard to remove myself from it. I just want to reach through the pages and hug little Forever Carlyle and tell her everything will be okay even though I know it probably won’t.

04

About me: Just another carbon-based life-form of the female persuasion trying to find my place in the world. This much I do know: I am a nerd and I’m proud of it. It’s been that way as long as I can remember. I love comics, archery, science, and beer (both drinking and making it). Follow me on Twitter @LeidamarieTL for more nerdy awesomeness.

LAZARUS #7 – Kulbir Mann

Michael Lark has an indelible look and once read never forgotten. Lazarus is an intriguing book about a miserable future with capitalism run amok. This bleak future is provided by Greg Rucka but it is Lark’s ability to show the effects on the characters. As we join Forever as a child, during her training, we can see her struggle with the definite moral concepts she is required to face. Her eyes are bulging to display her innocence but her heart is breaking, as we see the floods run down her cheek. It is such as dark book and the positivity is all but a small sliver waiting to grow.

THL - Lazarus

About Me: I Spend the day as a surgeon operating on people, spend the night as a blogger operating on comics! Check out my blog www.houseofflyingscalpels.com or follow me @kooliebear

DAREDEVIL #1 – Shane Graves

I pick Daredevil #1 and loved every single panel in it!

05

About Me: I am random-shane and I feel happy. Follow me @mprshane

DAREDEVIL #1 – Scott Keys

This week was a no-brainer for me, even in light of some absolutely AMAZING books.  Daredevil #1 was my most anticipated book, as well as my favorite straight-up super-hero book this week!  Waid and Samnee continue to amaze and entertain!

06

About Me: Scott Keys is a father, Butler University grad, pharmacist, and full-time comic nerd. You can follow his adventures around the spinner-rack and his Incoherent Comic Book Ramblings on: Twitter: @Like_car_Keys / Tumblr: likecarkeys.tumblr.com / Facebook: Scott Keys (Likecarkeys) / Google+: Scott Keys

MS. MARVEL #2 – Thomas Zimmer

The obvious things that make Ms Marvel no. 2 my pick for “book of the week” is the amazing art by Adrian Alphona and the perfect script by G. Willow Wilson. But this story is nothing new. The “awkward teen gets superpowers” trope has been done over and over. However, the slam dunk here is the supporting cast. We are given a family that offers a fresh voice, strongly written with love and reverence.  Sure I’m looking forward to her whupping up on The Absorbing Man but I sure appreciate the time and care it takes to get there.

07

About Me: Im Tommy. I love comics. Enjoy every sandwich. Follow me @VictorVonZoom

MS. MARVEL #2 – Conrad Roth

Who has not attempted to do this at one time or another? Unfortunately, the only fog that’s altered me in any way was at a Cypress Hill concert (yes, I’m old). Lest you think that the first issue(2nd printing available) was an aberration in its Marvel-ous-ness, rest assured, author G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona are crafting something truly heroic!

08

About Me: When I’m not buying, bagging, boarding, or reading comics, I’m likely to be found boisterously bitching about them on Twitter @conmandtherad

THE SIXTH GUN #39 – Mike Morgado

This comic is amazing every single month.  In a town overridden by enemies, separated from some of his allies, Drake Sinclair gets his hat back and looks badass while doing it.  It’s the little things in life.

09

About Me: Mike Morgado has been a comic nerd going on over 30 years. When he’s not at work or with his family, his favourite place to be is at the local comic shop on Wednesday’s with what he refers to as his comic club pals. He can be found online at @WTFisHalonCon or his incredibly ignored blog http://www.fourcolourwesterns.blogspot.com

BATMAN AND AQUAMAN #29 – Roderick Ruth

Mutated Damien clones for the win…

09

About Me: Roderick is an avid comic reader and collector, with a particular fondness for funny books and nerd nostalgia from the “Dark Ages of Comics” (also known as the late 80’s and 90’s). When he’s not diving in $1 long boxes trying to recapture his youth or working out his biceps from lifting his massive pull list every Wednesday at his comic shop, he can be found on Twitter @roderickruth.

ROCKET GIRL #4 – Pete Buser

Some people say that we were promised jet packs.  Well, Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare sure as hell gave them to us.  After one of the most kinetic chases ever put to paper (with said jet packs) our hero DaYoung bursts through the floor of Grand Central Station.  I so want to be a member of the Teen Police when I grow up.

10

About Me: Pete Buser is an enigma wrapped in a variant cover. Follow his mystery @petebuser

WONDER WOMAN #29 – Aaron Meyers

Wonder Woman is so great. Destiny, you can’t avoid it. Fate it fate.

11

About Me: Aaron Meyers loves reading comics, collecting comics and talking about comics. He’s grateful to share his love of comics with all of his friends on the Internet. From Twitter at @aaronmeyers, to his new podcast, Comics Therapy with Andrea Shockling, it’s all about the love of comics. He also loves his family, especially his wife, Chrissy Meyers. And while you were taking the time to read this, Aaron went and bought all the best issues from your store’s dollar bin. You lose, Aaron wins. #AllTheComics

Thanks as always for reading and sharing the most honored comics of the week with us. Same time next week, stay tuned!
