THE HONOR ROLL: October 9, 2013 Releases

This was a week full of thrills, chills, and fun! We have great spoiler filled picks for you this week. Hope you enjoy it!

SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #1 – Scott Keys

When I was reading the debut issue of Superman/Wonder Woman, and I got to this page…WOW!  It literally left me speechless.  I think it speaks for itself. I’ll shut up now and let you bask in it’s glory!

01

About Me: Scott Keys is a father, Butler University grad, pharmacist, and full-time comic nerd. You can follow his adventures around the spinner-rack and his Incoherent Comic Book Ramblings on: Twitter: @Like_car_Keys / Tumblr: likecarkeys.tumblr.com / Facebook: Scott Keys (Likecarkeys) / Google+: Scott Keys

STAR WARS #10 – J.J. Conquergood

Its issues like this where Brian Woods’ writing really makes me think in the voices of the original trilogy actors. Every issue of this series gets better and better.

02

About Me: Full time cable guy, Star Wars geek and soccer fanatic. The twitter addict can be found @loafandjug tweeting about insane customers, what he’s reading or being a soccer hooligan online.

INFINITY #4 – Shane Graves

Oh the part with Thor was so killer but it was the final panel, the Captain-y Captain America ‘now we win.’ line that put the icing on the Thor cake!

03

About me: I’m just a comic fan since childhood. I’m usually bouncing around twitter @mprshane or putting some sort of comic, video game, hockey or movie thing on his blog randomshane.com…plug-a-rific!

THREE #1 – Joey Caswell

There were a lot of great books to choose from this week, but I had to go with something from the first issue of Three. This first installment was a terrific issue, and this panel gives the reader a hint of the general tone to follow as the group of Spartans hunts and kills a Helot slave.

04

About Me: Joey is a graduate research scientist working in the areas of neuroscience & biophysics. He is also a reviewer and editor at All-Comic.com, and lives for all things nerd; comic books, roleplaying games, science fiction, fantasy, horror, etc. Follow him on twitter @summoning_ifrit

AVENGERS ARENA #16 – Leidamarie Tirado-Lee

This book gives me *ALL THE FEELS* every time I pick it up. Dennis Hopeless is an amazing story-teller who knows how to draw readers into this twisted Murder World deathmatch of his. Great characters, great story! Nuff said! If you aren’t already reading this I highly highly recommend you pick it up!

05

About me: Just another carbon-based life-form of the female persuasion trying to find my place in the world. This much I do know: I am a nerd and I’m proud of it. It’s been that way as long as I can remember. I love comics, archery, science, and beer (both drinking and making it). Follow me on Twitter @LeidamarieTL for more nerdy awesomeness.

ROCKET GIRL #1 – Thommy Zimmer

“Surprises!!” This is why I read comics. What an awesome week this has been – zombies, ninjas, gods and inhumans. I was certain my pick was going to be ( see above ) but “Rocket Girl” by Brandon Montclare with art popping off the pages by Amy Reeder just knocked me down.  Absolutely delightful! So much energy crackling from these pages. and from our heroine.  Cannot wait for more. Magnificent!

06

About Me: Im Tommy. I love comics. Enjoy every sandwhich. Follow me @VictorVonZoom

AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #1 – Ian Stephen

Let me start by saying, I don’t read Archie. I am familiar with all of the characters since they are basically a staple in american pop culture history, it just never looked like something I would enjoy. Next let me explain that I am not a fan of zombies, they can be cool but it feels, much like vampires, that they are poorly overused as plot devices in most mediums these days. However I do love everything that artist Francesco Francavilla does. His unique art style always stand out and attracts my eye. When I see his art, whether it’s a cover or a full book, I buy it. Francavilla manages to combine two things I don’t really care for and make me enjoy them, even to the point of this being my favorite issue this week. The panel that finally reveals the zombified Jughead is just plain awesome to look at and leaves us hanging to see how things will pan out for the rest of the Riverdale crew.

07

About Me: Ian Stephen is a human just like you (don’t question it) who loves comics and music. When I’m not making food for the hungry over-fed American population you can find me harassing musicians and comic-creators alike on Twitter @ianthevillain where i tend to spew hot garbage for the internet masses to ignore.

SHAOLIN COWBOY #1 – Pete Buser

The world has missed Geof Darrow and missed the Cowboy.  We finally get more of Darrow’s intricately detailed stylings and I could t be happier.  Out of the frying pan of the last Shaolin Cowboy series and into the fire of the new one we have S.C. preparing to face a horde of the undead.  You cannot imagine what comes next.

08

About Me: I like comics. A lot. You can talk to me about them @PeteBuser

AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #1 – Ben Diederich

The nostalgia of Archie blended with the horror of witchcraft, zombies, and secrets all wrapped under the cloak of gorgeous Francavilla art made this an easy pick. I don’t know how they make this an ongoing, but I can’t wait to see.

09

About Me: @Punkrocksellout is a former punk rocker turned molecular biologist turned patent attorney turned father, who spends way too much time on twitter when he’s not out running barefoot.

RACHEL RISING #20 – Will Pheesh

It’s a testament to Terry Moore’s skills as a storyteller, harkening back to his stunning opening scene in issue 18, that so much meaning and emotional punch could be packed into Ma Malai’s gently extended hand. Rachel Rising is a master work.

10

About Me: Will Pheesh wants you to be happy and well, and not just because it’s his profession. He can be found on Twitter at @WillPheesh.

BATTLING BOY #1 – Keith Silva

Here’s my hope: somewhere dozens and dozens of ten and eleven-year-old girls and boys got their hands on a copy of Battling Boy this past week. In time, these ‘Auroras’ and ‘Battling Boys’ will usher in a new generation of comic book cartoonists and writers. For as rare, as full of wonders and as beautiful as Paul Pope’s Battling Boy is, above all else, it is an idea engine and an inspiration for all ages who read it and wish, ‘gosh, I wish I had one of those enchanted t-shirts … and a scintilla of Pope’s gifts as a storyteller. Then again, maybe I do?

11

About Me: Keith Silva would love to take the ‘Majestic Gryphon’ t-shirt for a spin or perhaps, ‘Curious Orangutan.’ He writes for Comics Bulletin. Follow @keithpmsilva or for the more adventurous there’s Interested in Sophisticated Fun?

THOR #14 – Cameron Williams

Jason Aaron has definitely proven he doesn’t need three Thors to tell a story, as for the new one-Thor arc, Thor: God of Thunder remains one of Marvel’s best books. For anyone on the line, this book doesn’t rely on the reader’s knowledge of Asgard, nor does it get bogged down in mythology. Instead Jason Aaron continues to have Thor’s adventures be some of the most unique in super hero comics, tapping into its history to create a truly compelling story. If you haven’t read it yet, start on 13, read 14 and then catch up with trades. Utterly fantastic.

12

About Me: Cameron Williams needs a nap. He needs a nap with lucid dreaming, with comic books pre-inserted through the use of hypnosis. This would allow him to simultaneously catch up on sleep and comics. Currently he is catching up on being bitterly awake instead. He should be caught up on being bitterly awake by now, give how much time he has spent on it, but somehow it seems like there’s always more wonderful stuff to be bitterly awake though. He’s currently on Twitter at @Wasgo, be he’s too tired to be funny. He’ll pretend to be funny anyway, but nobody is laughing. It’s sad really

INFINITY #4 – Aaron Long

You’re damn right you sent the right guy, Cap. The cover of this comic had me revved months ago, and this issue shattered my feeble brain. Infinity was great, but this issue jacked it right up to awesome. THOOOOORRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

13

About Me: Aaron Long is the E-i-C of Comicosity. Feel free to poke around, we’ve got some damn good stuff on these pages.

AVENGERS ARENA #16 – Mike Morgado

This is the issue I have been waiting for since I believe issue 3! Chris Powell, the REAL Darkhawk is not dead and is back in the game!  I couldn’t be happier.

14

About Me: Mike Morgado has been a comic nerd going on over 30 years. When he’s not at work or with his family, his favourite place to be is at the local comic shop on Wednesday’s with what he refers to as his comic club pals. He can be found online at @WTFisHalonCon or his incredibly ignored blog http://www.fourcolourwesterns.blogspot.com/

ACTION PRESIDENT #1 – Conrad Roth

Straight from NYCC, The Exclusive Special Dead Cherry Tree Edition, Action Presidents: Washington!! Writer Fred Van Lente & Artist Ryan Dunlavey are back once again, to bring you some kick-ass, hysterically historical comics! Comics ain’t just for fiction, kids!

15

About Me: When I’m not buying, bagging, boarding, or reading comics, I’m likely to be found boisterously bitching about them on Twitter @conmandtherad.

MINIATURE JESUS #5 – Aaron Meyers

A powerful series concludes. I loved this. Dealing with big issues in a big way.

16

About Me: Aaron Meyers loves reading comics, collecting comics and talking about comics. He’s grateful to share his love of comics with all of his friends on the Internet. From Twitter at @aaronmeyers, to his new podcast, Comics Therapy with Andrea Shockling, it’s all about the love of comics. He also loves his family, especially his wife, Chrissy Meyers. And while you were taking the time to read this, Aaron went and bought all the best issues from your store’s dollar bin. You lose, Aaron wins. #AllTheComics

Thanks as always for reading and sharing the best comics of the week with us. Same time next week kids, stay tuned!
