ARCHIE VS. SHARKNADO #1
Written by Anthony C. Ferrante & Dan Parent
Art by Dan Parent & Rich Koslowski
Published by Archie Comics – $4.99

It’s that time of year in Riverdale! The end of the school year. Time for beaches, barbecues, fun in the sun and… sharknados!?! That’s right, get ready as Archie and the gang brave the storm of a tornado full a sharks that riffs off the pop culture phenomenon known as Sharknado! The story unfolds as sharknados are spotted on the “Feast” Coast! Our heroines have to figure out how to get back to Riverdale, where the storm is about to hit next. Soon Archie and the gang go, go, go as they battle the Sharknado-ravaged Riverdale! Who will live? Who will die? Will this take a bite out of the end-of-the-year prom? Uh… probably! The comic book action is also concurrent with the plot of Sharknado 3 and hits stands right before the film’s premiere in July on Syfy. Written by the Sharknado trilogy director Anthony C. Ferrante with Dan Parent.

Why It’s Hot: It’s that time of the year again! SHARKNADO is back this week for the third installment of the gold standard of extremely cheesy and ridiculous television movies. To celebrate the event comic book readers are given a crossover that matches the absurdity of the franchise, as the citizens of Riverdale meet the eponymous threat from above! If the track record of Archie Comics is any indication we can expect this to blow away our expectations (pun intended), and end up being some of the most fun we have reading comics this week!

CYBORG #1
Written by David Walker
Art by Ivan Reis
Published by DC Comics – $3.99

The machine that gives Cyborg his powers is evolving! The only problem is that machine is his body and he has no idea what’s causing these changes!

Why It’s Hot: Cyborg sees the last New 52 founding member of the Justice League receive his own ongoing title, and it’s about damn time. Readers may not be too familiar with the work of the talented David Walker, but you know this book is being pushed hard when one of the best creators in the industry is tapped for art duties. Ivan Reis is back on a monthly title, one of DC’s most underrated characters is getting his own title, and in a time where diversity is a hot topic DC gives readers a new series featuring an African American character in the lead role. All of that that is just the tip of the iceberg on why this is a must read first issue!

POWER UP #1
Written by Kate Leth
Art by Matt Cummings
Published by BOOM! Studios – $3.99

It has been foretold that four noble warriors of incredible strength would be gifted with cosmic abilities at a moment of planetary alignment…which, yeah, something definitely went wrong here. Amie is a disaffected twentysomething with a lot of attitude, Kevin is a washed-up athlete way past his prime, Sandy’s a mother of two teenagers, and Silas…is a goldfish. Just a normal goldfish. Are we sure we read that prophecy right?

Why It’s Hot: I have a feeling that the online comic book community is going to love Power Up. It’s a fun, unique, quirky, offbeat, and diverse comic brought into the world by a team of talented creators. Oh yeah, there’s a goldfish. A goldfish with powers. Come on, now THAT at the very least should get you interested.

WEIRDWORLD #2
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Mike Del Mundo
Published by Marvel Comics – $3.99

• Weirdworld is where the lost things go. Like the barbarian lord Arkon, who’s now prisoner of the underwater apes.
•  Or like his cellmate, a mysterious one-eyed man who appears to be made out of rock and calls himself a Crystal Warrior…

Why It’s Hot: The first issue of Weirdworld was absolutely stunning. The crazy story from Jason Aaron was brought to life by the amazing, jaw dropping art of Mike Del Mundo. Whether you’re reading Secret Wars or not this series deserves a spot in your collection. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better looking comic.

Bestselling new star writer ALES KOT teams up with white-hot artist MATT TAYLOR and DEADLY CLASS colorist extraordinaire LEE LOUGHRIDGE for an all-new ONGOING SERIES! The crime noir thrills and characters reminiscent of True Detective meet with mythical stakes worthy of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman in this original fantasy/horror/crime saga for mature readers. The road to hell and back begins in a MAX-SIZED FIRST ISSUE, with fifty-eight pages of story and no ads!

Why It’s Hot: Ales Kot and Matt Taylor bring us a tale featuring Los Angeles like we’ve never seen it before with. Wolf features as close to a proper representation of the city I’ve lived my entire life in and around as I’ve ever read. Throw in a supernatural bent that plays off of what makes the City of Angels unique, a super sized first issue, and you have a first issue just begging to be read.
