HOT FIVE: Week Of July 26, 2017

Welcome to Comicosity’s Hot Five. Hot Five is a short list of the top books we think you’ll want to be checking out. Be they new title launches, key issues or just continuing stories from some of the industry’s most acclaimed books, this list is your guaranteed gold in the comic market.

ALL NEW CLASSIC ARCHIE: YOUR PAL ARCHIE #1
Written by Ty Templeton
Art by Dan Parent
Published by Archie Comic Publications – $3.99

Classic-style Archie makes his return in this all-new, all-ages comic from Ty Templeton and Dan Parent! Issue #1 features one of five connecting variant covers by Les McClaine. Collect them all to create one giant image of Pop’s Chock’lit Shop!

Why It’s Hot: Both the Archie reboot and addition of horror comics to the line have resulted in some of the best Archie stories in years. When you take The CW’s Riverdale into consideration there are probably more eyeballs on these characters than there have been in years. Through all of this something has been missing in comic shops. That something is classic Archie, and it’s back.

FAITH & THE FUTURE FORCE #1
Written by Jody House
Art by Stephen Segovia & Barry Kitson
Published by Valiant Entertainment – $3.99

A SPECTACULAR SUMMER EVENT! This summer, every second counts when acclaimed writer Jody Houser (Mother Panic, Star Wars: Rogue One), explosive artist Stephen Segovia (Ninjak, Action Comics), comics legend Barry Kitson (Fantastic Four), and special surprise guests push Faith into a centuries-spanning fight for existence alongside the greatest heroes of the Valiant Universe…past, present, and future!Faith “Zephyr” Herbert – former member of Unity, current Harbinger Renegade, and Los Angeles’ #1 superhero – is the universe’s last, best chance at survival! Centuries from today, a devious artificial intelligence has unleashed a blistering attack on the very foundations of time …one that is unwriting history from beginning to end! Now, with her options exhausted, Neela Sethi, Timewalker – the self-appointed protector of what is and will be – has returned to the 21st century to recruit Earth’s greatest champions of today and tomorrow to oppose this existential threat…and she needs Faith to lead them! But why Faith? And why now?

This July, fly to the farthest edges of the future in a death-defying race to save time itself as Faith leads the charge alongside Valiant’s greatest heroes…and becomes a new legend for the ages!

Why It’s Hot: One of Valiant’s great strengths is making miniseries feel like major events without needing to crossover with a bazillion different comics. Now they have taken that approach and put fan favorite character Faith at the forefront. Add in an awesome creative team, and it’s looking like this can be another hit for the publisher.

THE FLASH #27
Written by Joshua Williamson
Art by Howard Porter & Paul Pelletier
Published by DC Comics – $2.99

“RUNNING SCARED” finale! Barry Allen and Eobard Thawne. Legendary enemies separated by centuries pulled through time itself to battle again and again. Until now. For one year THE FLASH has been building to this single epic moment: the ultimate showdown between The Flash and Reverse-Flash!

Why It’s Hot: The soliciation text speaks for itself. Barry Allen + Eobard Thawne = hype.

GO GO POWER RANGERS #1
Written by Ryan Parrott
Art by Dan Mora
Published by BOOM Studios – $3.99

The untold, personal story of what happens to Jason, Kim, Trini, Zack, and Billy following in the days after they first became Power Rangers.
Fighting evil is hard, but surviving high school may be even harder-welcome to real life in Angel Grove.

Why It’s Hot: Go go Power Rangers? It should be more, more Power Rangers at this point, as BOOM Studios is adding another mghty (morphin’) comic to its ranks. That is fine by me, and the rest of the readers that have helped make the franchise a comic book hit.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES/USAGI YOJIMBO
Written by Stan Sakai
Art by Stan Sakai
Published by IDW Publishing – $7.99

The TMNT are teleported to a world of talking animals-the world of Usagi Yojimbo! When the samarai rabbit embarks on a quest to save Japan and the deadly Jei blocks his path, a Turtle team-up may be the only chance for survival!

Why It’s Hot: I was going to write about how Usagi Yojimbo and the TMNT have been intertwined for years through crossovers in different mediums. I was going to write that the legendary Stan Sakai is one of the best ever. Everything I said remains true, but as I was about to write all of that the commercial for the new Usagi/TMNT action figures came on, and that put this comic over the top. Through comics, cartoons, and toys there is a multifaceted crossover that has the chance to be huge, and a treat to fans of all ages. This is going to be cool.

ALSO AVAILABLE THIS WEEK: All Star Batman #12, Doom Patrol #7, Infamous Iron Man #10,  Saga #45, Shutter #30
