Interview: Josh Gorfain Discusses MEATSPACE Part 2 And 3

Last year, Josh Gorfain successfully started his first project with the first issue of Meatspace. But issue 1 was only a small part of a larger story, and Josh wants to finish the arc for the fans who have been requested it since issue 1 was released. Meatspace follows a war veteran who now spends most of his days playing a massively multplayer online role playing game (MMORGP) co created by his son. He is forced back into the real world, however, when is son mysteriously dies of an overdose. Josh was kind enough to take time out of his day to answer a few questions about part 2 and 3 of Meatspace.

MS_pic2Maxwell Majernik: ‘Meatspace’ follows the character Lance, a war veteran who spends his days playing a MMORPG. What else can you tell us about Lance and his supporting cast?

Josh Gorfain: The main other characters include Rebecca, a new recruit to Johnny’s (Lance’s deceased son) team who catches on fairly early that there’s more to Lance Brighton than the robotic exterior that everyone else sees who plays a cleric in-game. Also on the team is Mary, a cyborg who has a dislike for Max the monkey-form who’s ego has ran away from him and is the Fighter of the online group. Mary plays a rogue in the group (which what Lance plays, so they hit it off quite early.). Also somewhat involved is Anton Actos, who was the main creator of the game DungeonWorld and had taken a liking to Johnny.

In the real world, there is Gillian, Lance’s ex-wife, who hates what her ex-husband got turned into and Micah Weaver, Lance’s old army buddy who’s life has taken a distinct shady turn.

MM: How much of the story takes place in the real world compared to their virtual lives in the MMORPG?

JG: I tried to keep the story balanced as much as I can between in-game activity and real-world activity. I would say it’s about 60real/40ingame. There are major plot points that happen in both places.

MM: Will readers be able to start at issue 2 as a jumping on point? Will issue 1 be available for new readers to catch up on the story?

MS_pic1JG: I highly recommend picking up the first issue. It is available at all price and reward levels.

MM: For issues 2 and 3, you brought aboard a new artist, Matt Furber. What new qualities does he bring to the book?

JG: Matt is amazing. He skill as an artist and his desire to get this project going is very infectious and matches my own. As you can see by the artwork he already supplied (they are on the Kickstarter page), while it’s a different distinct style from Andrew MacLean’s, it is equally awesome. I am fully confident that Matt will bring the words I have written to life that will blow people’s minds. I am incredibly fortunate to have Matt on my team to get this book done.

MM: Issue 1 of ‘Meatspace’ was also a kickstarter project. Is there anything you did different this time around or learned from your first kickstarter?

JG: I added some more interesting rewards, original artworks that I have accrued over the years (sadly, the sketch of Power Girl by Amanda Connor has already been pledged), statuettes of Lance that Matt has designed (oh, did I forget to mention that Matt also has experience in toy design?) and at the upper levels I offer to bring my culinary skill into your home and make you and guests a delicious meal (might as well put that culinary school education to good use, eh?). For the first issue, I kept it lean and mean with just the book, some prints that Andrew was generous to donate to the cause and original pages. I figured to have some fun with this one and see I can make it happen.
