MOM’S COVER WATCH: October 9, 2013

Contrast and color choice are the name of the game as the mother of all comics, Jessica Boyd, takes a look at the best covers for the week of October 9, 2013. Plus, one artist receives the double whammy!

batgirl24BATGIRL #24
Written by Gail Simone
Cover art by Alex Garner
Published by DC Comics

It can be hard to pull off an entire red background. Too bright and it hurts the eyes, too dark and the image is lost. Here, however, Alex Garner has this stark red background contrast well with Barbara Gordon’s red hair and the batlogo created clearly in blood splatter. There has been lots of bad blood passing between the Gordons, and now the confrontation has the addition of Barbara experiencing even more loss.

The heartbreaking events from issue #22 of Batgirl are continued on the very cover of this first book since the Villain’s Month takeover.

Published by IDW Publishing

Rainbow-brain-head. Judge Dredd style uniform. Beautifully rendered.

Along with the great contrast against the textured background, it’s obvious why this is making the list.

Published by Image Comics

Motion in comics is always a challenge for artists. Do you leave a trail of wind? Do you blur the background? Just what should you do?

Amy Reeder is going with all of the above, and she even has the stream from a jetpack! This Kickstarter/Image book has high contrast colors like blue and orange playing off each other to create a dynamic stream of motion. The main teen cop from an alternate future of our own is highlighted by being decked out in her white uniform.

It does a great job of showing motion, contrast and action while placing the main character in a diagonal position so you can take the whole thing in.

avengersarena16AVENGERS ARENA #16
Written by Dennis Hopeless
Cover art by Francesco Francavilla
Published by Marvel Comics

Is there any doubt about who created this cover? It’s very pulp nature style and look scream Francavilla. However, the addition of the blues and tans mix it up a bit.

Using the blaster outline of the art and the background-color title overlay, along with the adjectives, completes the feeling of a space odyssey movie about to pop-up at the drive-in theater. While not as blatant as some other Marvel books, the homage style covers that have been used in Avengers Arena are the kind you would love to have hanging on your wall on any given day.

Written by Roberto Aguirre Sacasa
Art by Francesco Francavilla
Published by Archie Comics

It’s a double whammy on the cover watch from Francavilla this week with the first zombified issue of the Riverdale gang hitting the stands.

This purple and green cover evokes the feeling of classic movie monster posters along with Romero’s original Night of the Living Dead at the same time. It’s the kind of cover that has actually given my own children the shivers while wanting them to dive into the pages all at the same time. I can hear the classic, “dun, dun, DUN” playing in my head while staring Jughead in the one open eye, which helps to drag the view across the page and down his face. You finally land in the graveyard where you see Reggie and a few other surprise figures hanging out. I recommend reading to discover their identities!
