There’s a new status quo between Batman and the GCPD, especially in regards to Harvey Bullock. Harvey offers a deal to Batman, and we meet the new addition to Harvey’s task force-Renee Montoya! Read this ALL-NEW FREE 8-page preview of DETECTIVE COMICS #41!

With our very first look at the all-new Batman in action, it’s clear that things in Gotham are never going to be the same. It strikes me that the identity of the new Dark Knight opens up a great possibility for the DC Universe: a return to focus on the men and women of Gotham Central that will feel very integrated into the monthly themes of the main book. Whether that’s a good or bad thing, I guess we’ll see.

What’s clear though is that Buccellato and Manapul are setting up an initial mystery that has already piqued my interest in a number of ways, not the least of which is just who is Renee Montoya? Historically, Renee is one of my favorite characters, appearing elsewhere in the Multiverse this very week in a starring role as The Question. But here, it’s her history with Harvey Bullock, Gotham City, her colleagues, and the criminals that takes center focus.

Knowing the care this creative team has taken with Harvey Bullock, and the depth of mystery they’ve added to this title already that doesn’t exclusively rely on the Batman, I’m intrigued to say the least. And with the unique look Manapul and company bring to Gotham, giving it an almost day-glo veneer while maintaining a certain amount of grit, it’s definitely going to be different than any story we’ve seen with Bullock and Montoya before.

The Verdict: TRY OUT
