The series takes a more macabre tone, as Oliver Queen faces off against a murderous trucker in Alaska before he is called home by his half-sister Emiko (from the Jeff Lemire run) to help her save Seattle from nefarious forces.

Green Arrow has been like a game of hot/cold since 2011. Cold. Colder. Warmer. Hot hot hot. Colder.

Well, it’s getting warmer already in here.

Patrick Zircher gives us a moody, dark version of Oliver Queen that is 100% different from Andrea Sorrentino’s, but no less evocative. It’s like a shadow follows him around from above, and everywhere he goes is just a bit darker for Oliver’s involvement. And I really like that. It gets to the heart of what made Green Arrow so compelling in his best runs, and makes for a fascinating story as well.

Gabe Eltaeb’s muted and dark color palette accentuates the moodiness behind Zircher’s pencils, and Percy — a writer I’m wholly unfamiliar with — doesn’t disappoint either. Bringing Emiko into the book is definitely one way to get my attention, but portraying Oliver as a complicated man, someone who does enough good things to offset his personal mistakes, is an even better one.

For being only 8 pages, I got to the end and thought I had read 20. That’s how much Percy was able to pack in. So, not only do I anticipate having a thoughtful, complex characterization in the book to come, but I also believe it will be more than worth the cost of admission. Bravo.

The Verdict: PULL LIST
