Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky have taken the comic book world by storm with their critically acclaimed, and commercially loved creator owned series, Sex Criminals. Over the past year the duo have shown readers a few things. First off they have shown that they can make a great comic book together. They have also become, hands down, the absolute best bromance in comics. Booster and Beetle have nothing on Matt and Chip. It is through this genuine bromance that their twisted sense of humor has manifested itself. This is truly apparent in the letter pages of Sex Criminals, and it is in those back pages where Just The Tips was born.
Before I go any further I want to give a special shoutout to Kelly Sue DeConnick, and Chip’s significant other. They are just the coolest, because they put up with the antics of this wonderfully twisted bromance.
Just The Tips may be the brain child of two comic book creators, but it isn’t a comic. It is a hardcover collection of sex tips, true stories, pickup lines, fake porno reviews, and crazy positions that was inspired by the letter pages from the comic. In many ways the book is a greatest hits collection with a lot of the same stories and tips found in Sex Criminals, but there is more than enough new material that shows off the duo’s sick sense of humor.
If you’re a fan of Sex Criminals, and know what you’re getting yourself into, then this book is a must buy. It makes sex fun (wait?). It makes sex dirty (huh?). Most of all it makes sex absolutely hilarious, and not in the embarrassing way that plenty of us have experienced in our lives, but rather a completely ridiculous manner. If you are a prude, are easily offended, or just don’t like sex jokes in general then this book is not for you. I laughed out loud reading this book more than I have at anything in a long time. Whether it’s the joke about Todd McFarlane’s balls (showing off Fraction’s personal love of baseball), vampire erotica, or Chip’s staple self-deprecating humor, there is so much to laugh at. It is very NSFW with it’s uncensored use of foul language, and beautiful renderings (scribblings) of dicks, vaginas, and full blown sexual positions (My favorite being Zdarsking… poor Chip).
The design of the book is great. It’s a bright and colorful book with most sections no longer than a page. Each category gets cycled through, and repeated which is nice. This touch makes the book a perfect coffee table book (if you so dare). It isn’t meant to be read in one sitting, but rather readers can pick the book up, and flip to any page for the laughs. It’s a 96 page hardcover priced at $12.99 which makes it an almost no brainer purchase, especially this time of the year. It’s the perfect holiday gift for all the sexual deviants in your life. Don’t forget the mothers out there. I’m sure they will love it, so forget that bracelet or necklace you were planning on buying. Just The Tips is much cheaper, and more enjoyable.
Overall, this experiment was a rousing success. Hopefully Sex Criminals lasts forever, and we get yearly editions of Just The Tips. I’m looking forward to years from now when Fraction and Zdarsky start discussing ED, Viagra, post menopausal sex, and tips for all of us when we are elderly. If you don’t like sex reduce my final score to a zero. If you don’t like Sex Criminals you can cut my score in half. If you don’t like sex jokes, well I don’t know why you’re still reading this review.
The Verdict: 9.5/10
