Polar opposites are forced to unite under the watch of Obi-Wan and Anakin in the entertaining second issue of this series.

Last issue, I found myself wowed by the storyline in the new world and a bit apathetic about the flashbacks to the Jedi Academy on Coruscant. I’m happy to report that, with this issue, both storylines were spot on and Obi-Wan & Anakin #2 is a great read from start to finish.

Charles Soule captures the personalities of the characters we know very well, to the point of being able to hear Palpatine’s voice become more sinister as events progress in the issue. The calmness of Obi-Wan is ever present and even though the story doesn’t drive forward by too many leaps or bounds, it moves at just the right speed for the story being told. More information is given to readers about Carnelion IV from people entrenched on either side of their civil war, and I like Soule’s tactic of showing how similar these foes are. He boils down many civil wars that exist in our modern day world to the stubbornness that drives them forward, and it immediately makes this conflict understandable. There is certainly more than meets the eye with these new characters and Soule handles both the old, and the new, very well.

Marco Checchetto is a beast. He is quickly becoming one of my favourite artists, and issues like this are the reason why. His extremely detailed work is jaw dropping when the setting of Carnelion IV is in play, and his work on Coruscant is just as strong. He captures the best qualities of young Obi-Wan in my mind, as well, which is imperative for this comic to work. He handles the grand, sweeping shots and the close up character work with skilled precision, and he is definitely a very good storyteller. Andres Mossa colours this issue very nicely, rendering the wild palette of Carnelion IV well and capturing the electricity of areas of Coruscant well. His “scenery”, in particular, leaps from the page and the colours chosen for the Jedi provide a stark contrast that fits the story well.

Obi-Wan & Anakin #2 is an exciting ride for Star Wars fans who enjoy heading back to the days of Obi-Wan’s early days as a Master. This creative team is building a solid adventure book and doing these iconic characters justice. Any apprehension I had about this series after the first issue is completely gone and I’m definitely game to see where this goes.

The Verdict: 9.0/10
