THE HONOR ROLL: February 8, 2017 Releases

Massive week of comics. Massive week of great picks. Massive spoilers ahead. Let’s get to it!

BLACK WIDOW #11 – James Kaplan

If you’re not reading Black Widow, you are really missing out on one of the best comics out there. Mark Waid and Chris Samnee are telling a terrific, twisty spy story full of stealth and revenge. On art, Samnee is delivering an absolute master class in sequential art storytelling. His sense of action and movement and pacing makes this issue in particular an intense, engaging and dramatic read. Colorist Matt Wilson’ continues to help create a great, muted, stealthy atmosphere with his colors. Great work all around.

About Me: James is a lawyer by day, and an avid reader of comics whenever he can.  He loves his family, friends, and getting all of them into comics. He writes longer comics reviews at panelpatter.com and is on Twitter @sinisterjhk.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA: REBIRTH #1 – Doug Zawisza

While the new roster is lacking a Hawk-person or two, it has a lot of personality range, which Steve Orlando is set to transform into interesting interactions and power combos. Batman, Black Canary, Atom (Ryan Choi), Killer Frost, Lobo, the Ray, and, at the heart of the team, Vixen. One of my favorite Leaguers appears to finally be inline for a turn in the spotlight, and with Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Oclair Albert, and Clayton Cowles handling the visuals, Justice League of America is a great looking comic book.

About Me: I’m Doug. Father of three, husband of one, fan of all things good. I’m a regular contributor here on Comicosity, an adjunct staff member of the Waiting for Doom podcast, and author of the Hawkman Companion from TwoMorrows. Twitter: @DZawisza

EAST OF WEST #31 –  Tom Barnett

Wow!! The last panel of East of West is a doozy! I was already happy to have a new issue, but this panel just upped the ante!

About Me: I’m Tom. Slightly addicted to comics, Doctor Who, Star Wars and Star Trek. I also try to spend some time behind the lens of my camera. Love Bronze Age comics and the Black Hole movie from Disney. Follow me @tphoto10

ALL-NEW WOLVERINE #17 – Kara Leavitt

This issue was a fantastic exploration of Laura Kinney’s character and the layered reasons why the trigger scent impacts her the way that it does. Gabby and Laura share such a deep level of trust, so much so that Gabby put herself in the room while Laura was under the effects of the trigger scent, knowing that she could heal from any damage caused, but trusting that Laura wouldn’t hurt her too badly. I’m excited to see Laura completely in control and free from the trigger scent for the first time.

About Me: Kara is a pre-vet sophomore at Tufts University. She loves reading comics in her spare time and frequenting her local movie theater. Follow her @karalea16

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA: REBIRTH #1 – Scott Keys

Justice League of America: Rebirth was awesome! Orlando is going to do great, just check out this scene with Batman and Lobo! He gets it!

HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #14 – #RoryPupOfDOOM

Woof.

JOHN CARTER: THE END #1 – Aaron Meyers

I didn’t think this would be something I cared about. But I do. I want to read more.

About Me: Aaron Meyers loves reading comics, collecting comics and talking about comics. He’s grateful to share his love of comics with all of his friends on the Internet. From Twitter at @aaronmeyers, to his new podcast, Comics Therapy with Andrea Shockling, it’s all about the love of comics. He also loves his family, especially his wife, Chrissy Meyers. And while you were taking the time to read this, Aaron went and bought all the best issues from your store’s dollar bin. You lose, Aaron wins. #AllTheComics

Thanks, as always for reading and sharing the most honored comics of the week with us. Same time next week!
