THE HONOR ROLL: October 31, 2018

A 5th week is usually a small week, but even a small week has gold to give. We have some golden spoiler-filled picks from our contributors for you to check out, so let’s get to it!

Scott Snyder, Jock, Matt Hollingsworth, Clem Robins – Image Comics

If you’re of a certain age, you’ll see this sequence and think: ‘Salem’s Lot’.  Followed by, ‘don’t let him in!’ It’s a typically unnerving moment in Scott Snyder and Jock’s Wytches: Bad Egg Halloween Special, a 64pp story returning to the world they created a few years back, a world in which monsters living underground are waiting to eat you. And it is bloody brilliant. If you like horror fiction at all, don’t miss this Image book which, like the original series, features a unique approach to comics colouring from Matt Hollingsworth and the crisp calligraphy of Clem Robins.

DOOM PATROL #12 Doug Zawisza

Gerard Way, Nick Derington, Jeremy Lambert, Dan McDaid, Tamra Bonvillain, Todd Klein – DC Comics

The Doom Patrol only appear in one panel in this comic (you’re welcome), but this is still an offbeat tale that is filled with fun. Sam, Val, and Lucius Reynolds are on a fantastic heroes’ quest. This issue sports a snazzy Dungeons and Dragons homage on the standard cover and a fun expansion on that motif later in the book. I’m not sure where or when the next Doom Patrol adventure will be, but for now, this is a nice supplement.

HEX WIVES #1 Tom Barnett

Ben Blacker, Mirka Andolfo, Marissa Louise – Vertigo Comics

A tense opening scene from Hex Wives. Love the colors here.

FENCE #11 – Kat!

C.S. Pacat, Johanna The Mad, Joana Lafuente, Jim Campbell – BOOM! Studios

Nicholas has worked so hard to get to this moment, and I just love the facial expression here.

SUPERMAN 100-PAGE GIANT #4 – Scott Keys

Tom King, Andy Kubert, various – DC Comics

So glad that I found the 4th issues if the DC/Walmart 100-Page Giants, because the Tom King/Andy Kubert Superman story in Superman 100-Page Giant #4 is outstanding! So cool to see this creative team take on such an iconic character is awesome!
